The bit of blurb on the front of the CD cover says they share a fair bit with fellow Liverpudlians Teardrop Explodes and Echo and the Bunneymen, this just isn’t true. This is by no means a slur on the actual music, I just find it hilarious when bands (including mine) are given comparisons which bear no resemblance to them at all.
The literature does have one thing right though, they are unmistakably from the Mersey school of pop-rock song writing and this tune is totally listenable within in that genre.
There is no new ground being broken here and there is something a little grating about the random “fuck” thrown in the chorus, which seems pointless within the context and a bit immature… but apart from that it’s a good, well structured pop song.
It’s a scant 2.33 minutes long and in my opinion I think that’s how the song rolls, I am a big fan of the three minute pop tune and every song has its natural length, bands shouldn’t be scared of doing what the song dictates and try to conform to radio friendly stereotypes. Although saying that, unless you are Radiohead you’re not going to get a 5minute song on the radio.
Anyway I digress…. The production is tight and clean, the guitars are interesting and pleasingly melodic, plus the dude has a nice voice, so I wouldn’t be upset if I heard this at a party or club, in fact I would be pleased!
Apparently they are just out of school and if I was writing music like this when I was their age I would be pretty chuffed. I wasn’t by the way, so I’m a little annoyed….
