This is clearly one of those well-produced albums that a band makes themselves, with love, care and attention. The songs pulse with atmospheric guitars and ethereal soundscapes – and as a writer who pays attention to details, I’d say there are some very well chosen lyrics too.
The vocals see-saw gently from moments vaguely reminiscent of Radiohead and the Stone Roses, all the way to the other end of the spectrum - for example the slightly A-Ha-esque quality of Semi-Automatic – which works ok, but if I were to point the finger, I’d say that tends to mean that the singer doesn’t have quite his own sound enough to identify it.
Misplaced benefits from a good classic Indie riff and a lovely lyric; Forces moves with a proper stomp and Soviets stands out for me as an all-rounder. Given time I think this will grow on you – but I’m not sure I hear a hit on there. Looking forward to seeing where they go next time.
Assessment : 3/5 - Ladies, this one is for your fellas… unless you’re an indie chick.
