GIORGIO TOZZI has died at the age of 88. Beloved U.S. opera star will be sadly missed.
A regular on Broadway and at the Metropolitan Opera in New York during his heyday, Tozzi died on Monday (30 May 11).
The cause of death has not been announced.
Tozzi's golden voice landed him top roles on the stage and he also provided lead vocals for the film version of Rodgers and Hammerstein's South Pacific.
He is perhaps best known for his starring roles in Mozart's Marriage of Figaro and Mussorgsky's Boris Gudunov.
Tozzi won three Grammy Awards in the 1960s and he was nominated for a Tony for his performance in Frank Loesser's The Most Happy Fella in 1980.
The singer also taught at Juilliard and Indiana University.
