Musicals have always been a unique type of entertainment, with all different genres morphing into song and dance; Grease, Sweeny Todd and Little Shop of Horrors are three examples. However, a musical based on the true events of 9/11 is something unique in and of itself.
Come From Away will be streaming on Apple TV+ in September this year (2021), and will tell the fear-ridden yet hopeful story of 7,000 people who were stranded in a small town called Gander, Newfoundland, after every single flight into the US were grounded on September 11th, 2001.
Come From Away is the filmed version of the musical, making it available to everyone with an Apple TV+ subscription.
The people of Newfoundland happily welcome the ‘come from aways’, as they were called, into their community after the disaster, the stranded civilians, as well as locals, process what has happened.
Along the way, these people find love, laughter, hope, and positivity in the unlikely and lasting bonds that they forge.
The live performance of Come From Away was filmed at the Gerald Schoenfeld Theatre in New York City, where the Broadway production is staged, for an audience which included both 9/11 survivors and frontline workers.
Twin Towers was attacked on September 11th, 2001, when two planes flew into the World Trade Centre. Many people were killed, and America took a long time to grow and recover from the horrific act that took away loved ones and friends.
The trailer for Come From Away shows the hard work of not only the cast, but also the crew as the stage is set perfectly for this dramatic tale of perseverance, fear and love. Showing that, despite the danger and terror that came from the 9/11 attack, people did make it through to the other side.
The musical appears to be a positive, heartfelt production, showing those who were far away from the horror, but also far away from their homes, friends and even family.
Tim Teeman from Daily Beast called this musical ‘A celebration of the best of humankind’, while Michael Dale from BroadwayWorld claimed the production to be ‘Inspiring and funny.’
It seems that Come From Away boasts the best things about humans, and showcases the love and compassion we are capable of giving one another, especially in the worst of times.
Come From Away will be streaming on Apple TV+ on September 10th, 2021.
