Musicals have been shining their way through popular culture for decades; films such as La La Land (2017), Grease (1978), and even Sweeny Todd: The Demon Barber of Fleet Street (2007) have proved that any genre can become a musical adventure.
This September (2021), Annette will grace cinemas in the UK and Ireland to relay a story of fame, love, confusion and adversity.
Adam Driver (Star Wars franchise, Marriage Story) and Marion Cotillard (Inception, Assassin’s Creed) star side-by-side in this new and inventive movie that The Daily Telegraph has called ‘Beautiful, sensual, startling’. The movie also stars Simon Helberg, known for his role as Howard in TV’s The Big Bang Theory.
Leos Carax directs this epic and unusual feature about two people, madly in love, and their ties to fame, fortune and the spotlight of the ever-hungry media.
This epic musical sees Carax work with Sparks, a beloved pop cult band, in order to tell an incredibly unique and cautious story surrounding the downfalls of love, riches, and being in the prying eye of the press.
Henry (Driver) is a stand-up comedian, his partner Ann (Cotillard), a wold-renowned and adored opera singer. They live in Los Angeles (LA) together, deciding that there will be the birthplace of their first child.
The couple are always in the media’s good graces, but all that seems to change once their daughter, Annette, is born.
Annette appears to have curious and ethereal gifts, and once her parents welcome her into the world, they begin to realise that they lives will be forever changed.
The trailer gives a very dramatic and intense feeling, as the couple struggle with the inclusion of their unique (if not slightly worrying) daughter into their lives.
We see Henry run from a crowd with the baby in his arms, he does yoga while slowly swaying Annette as she lies on his arm; Ann is also seen involved what appears to be a head-on collision...
The trailer also shows us glimpses of the musical side of things, which seem to be well woven into this tale of family, drama, and tension.
Featuring phenomenal performances from its two leads, Carax’s latest is an unabashedly unique and unforgettable spectacle, sound tracked by Sparks’ typically idiosyncratic music. Annette received a spectacular reception at the 2021 Cannes Film Festival, where it premiered as the Opening Film and won the coveted Best Director award.
Annette will be in UK and Ireland cinemas on September 3rd, 2021.
