The Rise of the Planet of the Apes

The Rise of the Planet of the Apes has remained at the top of the U.S. box office for a second week.

The latest addition to the 'Apes' franchise has been a huge hit with the critics and took a further $27.5 million over the weekend.

The movie has now taken in excess of $179 million worldwide and it held off the challenge from this week's new releases.

The highest of those new releases came in at number two in the form of The Help which took $25.5 million in it's opening weekend.

The movie marks the return to the big screen for Emma Stone in what is an adaptation of the Kathryn Stockett of the same name.

A look at what happens when a southern town's unspoken code of rules and behaviour is shattered by three courageous women who strike up an unlikely friendship.

Final Destination 5 is back and the latest instalment of the franchise opened at number three while The Smurfs fell two places to this week's four.

A third and final new entry was in at five as Jesse Eisenberg was back with comedy 30 Minutes or Less. Former #1 Cowboys & Aliens fell three places this week from three to six.

Captain America: The First Avenger was down two at seven while Crazy, Stupid Love fell just a single place this week.

Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows continues to do well worldwide but it was a faller this week - dropping from six to nine.

But The Change Up was this week's biggest casualty as it dropped six places from four to ten.
