Andy Serkis says that he would have been filled with 'horror' if he had had to wear a latex mask for the Planet of the Apes franchise.
Serkis takes on the central role of ape Caesar in Rise of the Planet of the Apes and Dawn of the Planet of the Apes, and is thankful that they used motion capture rather then the latex methods of the past.
The actor said: "When you think back to the originals I remember reading interviews with Roddy McDowall and Kim Hunter talking about the necessity to keep their faces moving so they could get facial expressions through the latex masks that they were wearing covering their faces - and they still did an amazing job.
"The thought of having to do that in the present day fills me with horror. To have to fight through latex but that's what performance capture allows you to do. It allows you to internalise and just be the character and behave in a naturalistic way."
Serkis has become the master of the motion capture performances with the likes of The Lord of the Rings and King Kong under his belt over the years, and with the Apes franchise he has created another beautiful performance.
Dawn of the Planet of the Apes hit the big screen over the summer and was both a critical and commercial smash. The film came three years after the success of Rise of the Planet of the Apes and went on to gross in excess of $708 million at the global box office. It is currently the seventh highest grossing movie of the year.
Serkis has also been involved in the motion capture development of the Hulk in Avengers: Age of Ultron, which is set to hit the big screen next year. The actor is also set to appear in the film, but his role is yet to be revealed.
2015 is set to be another great year for the actor as he is also on the cast list for Star Wars: Episode VII - The Force Awakens, which will be the first Star Wars from director J.J. Abrams.
