The UK box office is one of the biggest and most financially successful in the world, with many of the year's top movies performing well on these shores and scoring a number one hit. But which film has performed the best at the UK box office this year?

The Lego Movie

The Lego Movie

Is it a blockbuster film that has won over UK audiences? Or has a homegrown movie snagged the top spot? We take a look at some of the movies that have been raking in the money during 2014 and which movie has been the most successful in the UK.

1. The Lego Movie - $56,890,654

Transformers: Age of Extinction may be the movie that is the highest grossing film of 2014, but it is not the movie that has been the top performer at the UK… that title goes to The Lego Movie, which was released back at the beginning of 2014.

It was back in February when The Lego Movie hit the big screen, as it won over critics and topped the UK box office - not to mention it kicked off a brand new franchise and a second movie is already in the pipeline.

The Lego Movie saw Phil Lord and Christopher Miller reunite in the director's chair for the first time since the success since 21 Jump Street back in 2012, and that success continued as they made the switch from live action to animation.

The film followed an ordinary Lego construction worker who is recruited to join a quest to stop an evil tyrant from gluing the Lego universe into eternal stasis, and saw Chris Pratt, Will Arnett, Elizabeth Banks, Charlie Day, Will Ferrell, Morgan Freeman, and Jonah Hill all lend their voices to the project.

The Lego Movie spent three weeks at the UK's #1 movie and grossed over $56,8 million during that time. The movie went on to gross over $468 million at the global box office.

2. The Inbetweeners 2 - $55,652,783

The Inbetweeners has been a hit on both the small and big screen and returned to cinemas this summer for their second big screen outing. The Inbetweeners 2 came three years after the success of the first film, James Buckley, Simon Bird, Joe Thomas, and Black Harrison return as Jay, Will, Simon, and Neil.

However, it was all change in the director's chair as Damon Beesley and Iain Morris - who also penned the screenplay - took over from Ben Palmer. Beesley and Morris are no strangers to The Inbetweeners, having worked as directors, producers, and writers on the original television series.

The highly anticipated film was released in August, and followed Jay, Neil, Simon, and Will as they reunited in Australia for a holiday… what could possibly go wrong?

The movie was another UK smash as it spent two week at the top of the box office, toppling Guardians of the Galaxy and held off the challenge from The Expendables 3, as it grossed over $55,6 million during its time on release. It was eventually toppled by sci-fi film Lucy.

The Inbetweeners 2 is the highest grossing UK movie at the UK box office this year, and is the only UK film to feature in the top five.

3. Dawn of the Planet of the Apes - $55,198,182

Dawn of the Planet of the Apes was one of the summer movies that I was most excited about, as I was such a huge fan of Rise of the Planet of the Apes back in 2011. Three years on, and the franchise was back and was bigger, darker, and more daring a film than it hugely successful predecessor.

This time around, Matt Reeves took over the director's chair from Rupert Wyatt and the film was set over a decade after events of the first film. The movie sees the human race struggling to survive after a pandemic disease swept the planet and they are drawn into battle with the apes that have multiplied and grown strong.

Andy Serkis was the familiar name returning from the first film, and he was joined on the cast list by Jason Clarke, Gary Oldman, Keri Russell, Toby Kebbell, and Kodi Smit-McPhee, as the director found the balance between live action and wonderful motion capture performances - Serkis is once again on top form in the central role of Caesar.

Dawn of the Planet of the Apes was both a critical and commercial hit upon release and went on to spend a week at the UK's number one film. It grossed just over $55 million at the UK box office, making it one of the most successful films in the UK.

The movie also went on to gross over $708 million at the global box office, and is the seventh highest grossing film of 2014.

4. Guardians of the Galaxy - $47,385,948

Guardians of the Galaxy has been one of the most successful and well received movies of 2014, and it was also a hit at the UK box office as well when it was released back in the summer.

Guardians of the Galaxy was the second of two Marvel movies to be released this year, and introduced us to a brand new franchise, which was directed by James Gunn - this was the biggest film of his career and the first time that he had helmed a Marvel film.

Almost completely set it space, Guardians of the Galaxy was the most adventurous Marvel movie to date, and yet it was a triumph as Gunn captured a great otherworld feel, while keeping the action and the comedy that Marvel movies are so famed for.

Chris Pratt, Zoe Saldana, Dave Bautista, Bradley Cooper, and Vin Diesel brought the central characters of Peter Quill, Gamora, Drax, Rocket, and Groot alive in a mix of live action and special effect roles - I really can't wait to see this bunch of actors reunite for the sequel, which is due to drop in 2017.

Guardians of the Galaxy topped both the UK and U.S. box office and domestically took over $47 million - making it the most successful Marvel film in the UK this year.

5. X-Men: Days of Future Past - $45,595,814

X-Men: Days of Future Past was another most summer hit and a movie that really did not leave fans disappointed. It was another of the summer blockbusters that I was particularly looking forward to, and Bryan Singer's return to the X-Men franchise was nothing short of a triumph.

Singer was back in the director's chair and at the helm of an X-Men movie for the first time since the terrific X2, as he brought stars of the original franchise and actors from the new series together for the first time.

Michael Fassbender, Jennifer Lawrence, James McAvoy, Nicholas Hoult, Hugh Jackman, Patrick Stewart, Ian McKellen, Halle Berry, and Juno Page all came together to make up one of the best ensemble cast lists of the summer - it really was great to see all of the stars together for the first time as the film jumped between the past and the future.

X-Men: Days of Future Past topped the UK box office, bringing the reign of Godzilla to an end, as well as enjoying box office success around the globe. The movie grossed over $746 million worldwide and the fourth highest grossing film of the year.

Other movies that have performed well at the UK box office include How To Train Your Dragon 2, The Amazing Spider Man 2, The Wolf of Wall Street, Gone Girl, and Transformers: Age of Extinction.
