The Rise of the Planet of the Apes
The Rise of the Planet of the Apes has topped the U.S. box office - toppling Cowboys and Aliens from the top spot.
The Rise of the Planet of the Apes has been met well by the critics and brings together a cast that includes James Franco, Frieda Pinto and Brian Cox.
An origin story set in present day San Francisco, where man's own experiments with genetic engineering lead to the development of intelligence in apes and the onset of a war for supremacy.
Directed by Rupert Wyatt the movie has taken $54 million, more than the studio expected, to comfortably take the #1 spot.
The Smurfs, which ended up at number two last week after a recount, stayed at two for the second consecutive week while Cowboys and Aliens fell two places after just a week at the top.
The Change Up was the second and final new entry inside the top ten this week and it opened at number four.
The movie sees Ryan Reynolds return to the big screen and team up with Jason Bateman in the David Dobkin directed movie.
There was a two place drop for Captain America: The First Avenger as the latest Marvel movie rounded off the top five.
Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows fell out of the top five since it's release but has so far grossed in excess of $1,133 billion at the global box office.
There were also two place drops for Crazy, Stupid Love, Friends With benefits and Horrible Bosses as they finished the week at seven, eight and nine.
Transformers: Dark of the Moon is the first movie in the franchise to break $1billion at the box office and it rounded off the top ten - falling two places from last week's number eight.
