Rise of the Planet of the Apes was one of the big unexpected hits of summer 2011, and now the eagerly anticipated sequel Dawn of the Planet of the Apes is on the horizon.
I was a huge fan of the first film, and I am excited to see how director Matt Reeves carries on the story in the second instalment: if it is as good as the first film, we are in for a major treat this July.
It is all change in the director's chair this time around, as Reevest takes over from Rupert Wyatt.
Rise of the Planet of the Apes will mark the fourth feature film for Reeves, after bringing us The Pallbearer, Cloverfield, and Let Me In.
It is also all change on the cast list as Gary Oldman, Jason Clarke, Toby Kebbell, Judy Greer, Keri Russell and Kodi Smit-McPhee will all star.
The only main actor who is returning to the franchise is the fantastic Andy Serkis. Serkis' performance as ape Caesar was the highlight of the first film, and I am excited to see him return to this role.
A growing nation of genetically evolved apes led by Caesar is threatened by a band of human survivors of the devastating virus unleashed a decade earlier.
They reach a fragile peace, but it proves short-lived, as both sides are brought to the brink of a war that will determine who will emerge as Earth’s dominant species.
This time around, the movie looks to be darker and grittier than the first, as the relationship between the apes and the humans is explore further and pushed to breaking point.
Of all of the summer movies, Dawn of the Planet of the Apes is one that I am most looking forward to as it looks like it is going to be an exciting and tense ride.
Dawn of the Planet of the Apes is released 17th July.
