David Boreanaz

David Boreanaz

David Boreanaz is back with the fourth series of hit show Bones, which sees him return to the character of Seeley Joseph Booth alongside Emily Deschanel.

- So you're directing?

Yes, so I heard.(Laughter.)

- We've heard about it. The strip club, the lap dance.

Oh, Emily told you what a better way for -- Boreanaz must have sat down and gave Hart a list
of things that he wants in his episode. Did she say that to you?

- Yes, she did.

I guarantee you she said it because she's going to give me a hard time until the damn thing
is wrapped. And she'll continue to. No. Yeah, that's what's great about her. She continues to make me smile. (Laughter.)

- So you didn't have any input in the...

I had no input whatsoever.

- Just a coincidence?

I ended up reading the script and, you know, I get the bungee jumping opening with a really a
cool stunt that led to a car dealership to a fast car to a monkey to a strip club to her driving a car.

- All you want in a TV show.

All in one TV show, man. It's all wrapped in a capsule and everybody would be happy.

- You didn't see the script beforehand before you were directing it then?

Well, I'm prepping now so I'm just -- I'm on my third day of prepping, so I just gotta land down two more locations and I'm ready to roll.

- So you gotta go to a couple of strip clubs and check them out?

I did that already. I did that yesterday. It took -- it was easy. 10-minute thing. I know I had to get out fast because they -- when they opened up the club, the gentleman wiped down the pole
and then he proceeded to take the cloth and wipe down the buffet area.

- Nice.

Isn't that nice.

- Classy.

It's a classy joint we're shooting in. (Laughter.)

-So which is your favorite strip joint? (Laughter.)

Next. (Laughter.)

- So we heard that you and Emily are finally going to get together at the end of the season.

Well, we already are together. So I know that's funny that there's two characters that have
been together I guess and then we'll get together again.

- Do you know any more details?

I don't. All I know is that we're together now, so I don't know. People say, "When are you going to get together?" Well, we're together now. I mean, our relationship really kind of drives the show and puts us in positions and areas that we, would make us either feel uncomfortable or comfortable and conflicting with each other, so which kind of makes sense and I think that's the beauty of the whole thing.

- Does it ever worry you? Sometimes the shows when the two main characters do get together the sexual tension is realized it's been the way over the years that often kind of vibe can kill a show sometimes. Sometimes it can maybe improve it which is obviously...

God. I don't know.

- Does it worry you though that...

No. Because I mean, we're going into the fourth season of a television show and we've maintained a great relationship with our characters and brought it to that forefront and driven there. So --
and we'll continue to do that and go there and then be pulled apart and have you imagining what it could be like. Because I think that's what really the show is about.

And I mean, you know, for us to go into bed and have sex and have the audience see it, it's just a cheap way of paying that off.

And I think the way that we did our first kiss and the way you may see us at the end of the season is a lot smarter than the other way around. I mean, I can basically -- what would you -- basically like the two characters to just do it on the lab?

- Not really.

I know. So there you go. (Laughter.)

- But thanks for that visual.

Yeah. So it's not going to happen.

- Why is it important for the show to add a therapist now since year three -- you have two concerning your character, but since year three it was...

Well, I think that you've never seen anyone play a therapist that's kind of helped them deal
with their relationship outside of their workforce or in their work to deal with each other.

Which is just a great character and a great person to add that's somebody who can steer both these characters in a way that we can find out why one of the characters doesn't want to get too close to the other one. So I think therapy is a good way of doing it.

- What TV shows do you watch yourself?

"Top Chef" is one of my favorites.

- Everyone loves that.

Yeah, it's a great show. Well, I like cooking. I like to cook. Gardening shows. I mean, I'm
a big sports fan so I think I watch every sports game that's on the radar, a lot of NHL games so -- movie classics.

That's about it. I don't really watch I was watching "Dexter" when it first came out and then I switched. I lost interest in that. And I'm not -- I'm the type of guy who can't follow a show.

- When Emily was talking she seemed to be really into the whole forensic side of it and fascinated by all the bones and the skulls. Is that something that you've picked up in as well? Is that something you're interested in, that side of it, the forensic side? I mean, I know that you're...

Yeah.

-...but just being around the kind of the lab sort of side of it.

Nothing whatsoever.

- Oh.

I don't like the lab. I don't like being in the lab. I don't like going to the lab. I quite honestly just told Hart never to put me in the lab anymore. (Laughter.)

-Do you want more action then? What, if you could...

I want more action. Definitely. I mean, I think we're doing a little bit more of that this year and we'll be doing more so.

We just did one where, you know, the grave digger comes back and I get knocked on my head and I wake up in a submarine that's in -- buried in a boat that's sinking so I have to get out.

So the more action oriented the shows I want more action. Because I like that kind of stuff.

- Playing with guns a bit more of that?

Well, being responsible with a firearm.(Laughter.)

- Very well put.

In a situation in a scene that would dictate to use a firearm responsibly, yes, that would be good.

- I wasn't trying to trick you there. (Laughter.)

I've seen it before.

- No, you answered that like a true professional. (Laughter.)

But I do think more action would be great.

- So you speak to Hart. You said I want to be playing -- I want to be responsible with firearms
but...

Well, no. I just went to Hart and said it would be great to do more stunts and see the two characters together trying to get out of a situation that is a little bit more dangerous.

- Is that why the Lamborghini comes into it?

No. You know what? The car thing is just really something that's part of the storyline. It kind of comes in 'cause we go in and investigate and find out that the gentleman who was killed worked at the car dealership called Jungle Jim's, which is a safari theme kind of car dealership.

And across the street is The Prestige automobile car dealership, which is two different types of car dealerships. So we kind of -- you know, I get the car towards the end of the episode and there's a funny scene where I'm trying to get information from the guy who works at Prestige by driving his car very fast.

- Oh.

On a road that's a little bumpy. Very fast car on -- expensive car that he doesn't want to see
damaged.

- So he gets nervous?

He gets very nervous. Very nervous. So I mean, the car just kind of comes in towards the end
as a little bit of a -- just to have fun with the characters.

- I was thinking vampires both in film and TV seem to be more popular now than ever. Do you feel like you're kind of slightly responsible for those

No, I don't.

- I mean, it's everywhere; isn't it?

Well, I mean, I think that it -- I think with everything there's change and new stories that come out and whether it's a new show or a film or whatever. So I think that it's just -- you know, I
don't think that I'm responsible for any of that stuff.

I just, it was part of a great show that had, was part of a great character that I really enjoyed playing and I think of it as just as a journey. That's all. I don't think there's any kind of responsibility towards it though.

I mean, to each has their own experiences on what they work on and if you're fortunate and blessed to be a part of something that creative, that's great. And if not, you just go to the next thing and see what happens.

- I have a UK centric question. In the beginning of Season 4 you were filming in the UK and you
did...

Uh-huh.

- Did you actually get a chance to see anything in the UK or were you just so busy filming?

Oh, I saw a tons of things in the UK.

- Yeah.

I went to the wax museum. (Laughter.)

- Would that be Madame Tussaud's?

No, I wanted to go there, but I went on the wheel. The big white wheel. That was nice. That was fun.

- You had a good time and you didn't just...

I couldn't -- I couldn't stay in my hotel room. I'm not, you know, we'd work 10, 11 hours and go back and go down to the bar and have a drink then go for a walk and have dinner somewhere. I'm not the type of person who likes to sit in their room and...

- How different was it kind of being on location way over there without your usual crew and all
the rest of it?

I loved it. I mean, I loved the challenges and the people and the relationship. I mean, I think that's great. I don't, I mean, I don't like comfort in things. So,I mean, only in my bed and
sheets. I'm sure you'll misquote me on that one too.(Laughter.)

I just, I quite honestly just think it's great to be able to go somewhere and experience a new crew. I mean, why not.

- Yeah, of course.

Change. Change is great.

- Whereabouts were you staying?

In London?

- Uh-huh. What were you near by?

I was down in the theater district, in that area.

- Oh, central.

Yeah. So, you know, which is the Soho area which is very vibrant and alive with the characters. So that area.

- And we were asking -- anywhere else you'd like to go on location? Any dream locations you'd like to...

Italy would be nice. Rome. Paris. It would be nice. Sure. I'd like to go to Rome.

- Would your family get to travel with you on those places? That would be a double whammy.

Yeah. Not really. I don't really get involved while I'm working. Maybe towards the end of it, sure but not when I'm like at the start of production 'cause it's just too much stuff going on.
Too much work.

- How hard do you find balancing that sort of working? Because when you're in a TV show those hours are crazy.

When I'm on show? Oh, my God.

- Seriously. I hate to break it to you.

Wow! It's like a dream.

- You're actually happy and employed and everything. Do you find it hard to balance the personal -- finding time with your wife and kids?

Yeah, there's a balance that definitely is there that you maintain as best as you possibly can.
There's a lot of sacrifices and a lot of missed opportunities and moments that, you know, can be very sad at times and very elating.

I mean, I can come home and not see my son for the whole day, which is very sad to me, but I can go give him a kiss goodnight and spend five minutes with him at least and to me that's like a year, that moment.

So there's a lot of down time -- there's a lot of time that you do miss out on and that's really kind of -- that's the hard part about it. But you just balance it by -- you know, with -- with the work and making it as -- for me it's my experiences. So I use it.

- What about Zack's storyline this year? We heard (inaudible) you know he was supposed to have killed someone.

Who me? My character?

- No. Zack.

Zack is supposed to kill someone?

- He admitted he didn't kill...

Oh, yeah, yeah, yeah, I know what you're saying. His character admitted to not being the killer...

Unidentified speaker: He admitted it to Sweets.

David Boreanaz: Yeah, yeah, he admitted it to Sweets. Yeah, it was a one-episode show. Yes.

- So will it be an ark -- a storyline for all the season to discover who did it and if he will be innocent? Is Zack's storyline going to be major storyline?

Well, I think Zack will be kind of pretty much -- I mean, I think that they'll go back and see him again in the white room that he's in right now. So I think it will be a useful resource for figuring things out maybe. Possibly, yeah. That can happen.
