Lavender

Lavender

Here Tisserand Aromatherapy give us the low down on 10 essential oils we all need in our lives and why:

Tea Tree

Hailing from Australia, Tea Tree is one of the most popular essential oils in the world; and it’s easy to see why. With antibacterial, antiviral and antiseptic properties, Tea Tree packs a punch in the natural medicine department and should be a staple in every self-respecting family bathroom cabinet.

A couple of drops of Tea Tree applied to a cotton pad and swept over the skin will help beat bothersome blemishes, whilst diffusing the oil will help protect from viral infections during the winter months.

Lavender

Another favourite in the essential oil world, Lavender essential oil is the metaphorical grandma of aromatherapy. Its soothing fragrance helps to gently calm anxiety and promote relaxation – much the same as a hug from Granny.

A couple of drops on a pillow at bedtime will fill the room with comforting fragrance – perfect for encouraging a peaceful night’s sleep.

Rose

There is nothing more beautiful than the soft, feminine fragrance of Rose, but this indulgent essential oil’s benefits extend far beyond scent appeal.  Rose helps to boost the feelings of femininity, making it ideal to use during periods of hormone-related flatness. When mixed with a carrier oil, Rose also makes a wonderfully nourishing and indulgent facial treatment. Try a deeply moisturising carrier such as Peach Kernel for the best results.

Frankincense

Frankincense essential oil is bursting with skin-pampering properties and will not only help to soften and tone, it also boosts cell regeneration, helping over-worked, lack-lustre skin to repair itself whilst restoring the skin’s natural suppleness - clever thing.

Try creating a spa worthy facial treatment at home by blending 2 drops of Frankincense with 1 drop of Rose and 1 drop of Lavender in 10mls of carrier oil (Sweet Almond Oil works well) and massage in to the face nightly.

Rosemary

A recent survey from Northumbria University found that pupils working in a room infused with Rosemary essential oil performed 5-7% better in memory tests. This invigorating oil works wonders at work or home to help boost concentration and sharpen focus. Try a couple of drops on a tissue to inhale whilst working or diffuse a couple of drops with Lemon essential oil in the office, for an afternoon boost.

Clary Sage

Every gal’s pal, Clary Sage essential oil is a hormone-balancing mastermind. Enjoy an aromatherapy bath with Clary Sage to ease the symptoms of PMS and balance mood swings. In 10ml of dispersing oil or full fat milk blend 3 drops of Clary Sage and 2 drops of Jasmine. Swirl in the bath to fully disperse, sink back and relax.

Peppermint

Dehydration and stress are two major causes of headache which can leave us less than focussed on our daily tasks. Next time the on-set of a headache appears, have a glass of water and dab a couple of drops of Peppermint on to a tissue and inhale. The refreshing fragrance will help to open the airways and sharpen the mind, easing the unwanted symptoms of the headache.

Eucalyptus

Strong and clearing Eucalyptus is not only wonderfully menthol in aroma, it also a power-player in the decongestant arena. When the signs of a cold emerge, fill a bowl with warm water and add 3 drops of Eucalyptus. Drape a towel over your head and over the bowl and inhale the vapours for a few minutes to ease respiratory issues and de-congest the sinuses, naturally.

Lemon

Lemon is quite simply a wonderfully uplifting essential oil, with superior pep-up power. A quick whiff of this fizzy fragrance is sure to lift a dark mood and if used in massage, it’s toning and astringent properties will help to firm and rejuvenate the skin.

Jasmine

The ultimate oil for getting your ‘sexy-back’. Deeply feminine and sensual, a couple of drops of Jasmine with its aphrodisiac properties are sure to get you in the mood, soothing frayed nerves and enlivening sexual vitality. Try 2 drops of Jasmine essential oil blended with 3 drops of Sweet Orange in 10mls of carrier oil. Massage in to the chest when a boost is needed.
