2010 was an excellent year for animation and Despicable Me was one of the genre's biggest success stories.
In a happy suburban neighborhood surrounded by white picket fences with flowering rose bushes, sits a black house with a dead lawn.
Unbeknownst to the neighbors, hidden beneath this home is a vast secret hideout. Surrounded by a small army of minions, we discover Gru (voiced by Steve Carell), planning the biggest heist in the history of the world. He is going to steal the moon!!
Gru delights in all things wicked. Armed with his arsenal of shrink rays, freeze rays, and battle-ready vehicles for land and air, he vanquishes all who stand in his way.
Until the day he encounters the immense will of three little orphaned girls who look at him and see something that no one else has ever seen: a potential Dad.
The world's greatest villain has just met his greatest challenge: three little girls named Margo, Edith and Agnes.
It's not very often that you get a movie that is told from the perspective of the villain - and that in itself makes Despicable Me an interesting watch.
The voice cast, as we have come to expect, is superb!! Steve Carell brings his troubled character to life while Russell Brand is almost unrecognisable as Dr. Nefario.
Gru is a very well constructed character with so many levels - he wanted approval from his mother, and yet he is a villian with a very large heart.
Despicable Me is a very enjoyable movie, even if it doesn't manage to scale the dizzy heights of Toy Story 3, that mixes laughs with heartwarming sentimentality.
The animation is stylish with plenty of laughs - even if it's not laugh out loud funny - and the minions are a superb and very cute creation!
Despicable Me is a great fight between to uber villains as well as a touching story about a man who finds family life to be far more rewarding.
While this movie is not without it's flaws it's a good watch for all the family.
Despicable Me is out on DVD and Blu Ray now
