Now fans are gearing up to take on the second season, with rumours flying high about what we should all expect and announcements whetting our appetites like never before.

Where did we leave off?

At the end of season one, parallel timelines, alternate universes and multiple identities were all confirmed, with Barry Allen unlocking the Speed Force and being given a few glimpses of the future, allowing audiences a taste of what may be to come.

A huge cliffhanger came with a colossal black hole which gained momentum after forming from S.T.A.R. Labs and threatening to destroy Central City before the rest of the world. Though we last saw Barry leaping into the hole and running in the opposite direction, we didn't see whether or not he was successful in bringing it down, though what we've seen in promotional material so far would suggest he was - but not without many repercussions.

The final episode also saw the defeat of Eobard Thawne, a man who had been disguised as Harrison Wells throughout the entire first season and was intent on destroying Barry Allen after murdering his mother all those years ago. Thawne had hoped that in bringing such tragedy to young Allen's life, he could make sure the youngster never recovered from his past and in doing so, change the future, never allowing Barry to become The Flash and become embroiled in a never-ending battle against Thawne.

When Barry's friends realise what is at stake, and Eddie Thawne discovers that he is a distant relative essential to the survival of Eobard, Eddie kills himself so that Eobard would never be born in what was a hugely emotional and powerful scene. But with Eddie out of the picture and Iris devestated by the loss, could she find romance elsewhere?

Where do things go from here?

It's a tough one predicting what's going to happen in The Flash, because it literally has so many different avenues it could travel down. If there's one thing for sure, it's that we're going to see a lot more travel between alternate universes, with Atom Smasher being one of the first to leave his reality for Central City and a chance at defeating The Flash.

Chatting about what we can expect was producer Gabrielle Stanton, who told Collider: "[Barry] went through a lot, at the end of last season. He's definitely going to start this season with a step back and be like, "What am I doing? Why am I doing this?" If last season was the journey of Barry discovering he's a hero, this season is definitely him trying to figure out what that means. What is it to be a hero? What does he need to be a hero? What is it going to do to his personal relationships?"

Oh, and there's a Flash signal...

Who's back for season 2?

Grant Gustin returns in the titular role, with Candice Patton also back as Iris West, Danielle Panabaker returning as Caitlin Snow, Carlos Valdes back as Cisco Ramon, Jesse L. Martin onboard as Detective Joe West and Tom Cavanagh returning in some form, either as Dr. Harrison Wells or Eobard Thawne.

We should also expect to see Barry's father Henry Allen (John Wesley Shipp) at some point, with Wentworth Miller and Peyton List also returning as brother/sister duo Captain Cold and Golden Glider respectively. It wouldn't be surprising to also see Mick Rory (Dominic Purcell) by their side.

With crossover planned once more for Arrow and The Flash, the Arrow cast including Stephen Amell and Emily Bett Rickards will appear, and though details surrounding other characters are being kept closely guarded, seeing the likes of Dr. Martin Stein (Victor Garber) and Ronnie Raymond (Robbie Amell) wouldn't come as a huge shock.

Which new faces are onboard?

Tony Todd will voice the season's overarching villain Zoom, with executive producer andrew Kreisberg commenting: "Part of the mystery of the season is who or what is underneath the Zoom outfit, and so we wanted to do something like James Earl Jones as Darth Vader - this iconic voice coming out of this mask. Last year, we thought of the Reverse-Flash as a speed warrior; this year, Zoom is like a speed demon, and no one does demon-voice better than Tony Todd."

Newcomer Violett Beane will play speedster Jesse Quick, appearing in multiple episodes as she's caught between both Flash and Zoom.

Hemlock Grove actor Demore Barnes steps into the shoes of Henry Hewitt, better known as Firestorm villain Tokamak, and is described as "a charming, but cocky scientist who was affected by the same Particle Accelerator explosion that created The Flash. When Caitlin Snow recruits him to join the team at S.T.A.R. Labs, Hewitt jumps at the opportunity to fulfill his destiny as a powerful metahuman."

Adam Copeland, formerly known as WWE wrestler Edge will be taking on the role of villain Atom Smasher, and he'll be one of the first baddies lined up to take on Flash, appearing in the premiere episode.

Eagle-eyed fans may have noticed a certain speedster's winged helmet in the first season's finale, and it's now been confirmed that Jay Garrick will be introduced in the second season, with Teddy Sears stepping into his shoes. He's a "mentory character to Barry. Jay has seen some things that Barry hasn't seen, and he's going to be helping him through the process," according to producer Stanton.

He's not the only alternative Flash to be shown this season, with Keiynan Lonsdale also joining the cast in the role of Wally West.

Patty Spivot will also be involved, played by Shantel VanSanten.

Both Hawkgirl and Hawkman will also be introduced through The Flash and Arrow before their Legends of Tomorrow debuts.

Where are the promotional clips?

Right here! Enjoy - it's going to be an extremely bumpy ride.

The Flash season two premieres Tuesday, October 6 at 7/8 central on The CW.
