A new Netflix series from DC has hit the streaming service today (June 4th, 2021), and it looks like a brilliant new take on an apocalyptic world. Robert Downey Jr. and his wife are executive producers on the show, which suggests that it will really hit the mark!
The show follows Gus (Christian Convery) as he fights his way through a prejudiced world in order to keep himself safe. Earth seems to be in a state of panic and disarray, as a virus has wiped out most of humanity.
At the same time, babies are being born who are a cross between humans and animals, known as hybrids. As Gus ventures out into the dangerous world to find his mother, Doctor Singh (Adeel Akhtar) searches for a cure to the sickness that is quickly killing humanity.
Here, we break down some characters within Sweet Tooth, so you know who is who before you watch; or if you’re confused after the first episode.
Christian Convery as Gus
Gus is a hybrid child with antlers and deer-like facial features. Being a hybrid, he also has other abilities such as night vision and heightened agility. Gus may be the first of his kind to be born, as he is a few years older than the others. He can also talk which the other hybrids cannot seem to do.
The young boy lives with his ‘Pubba’, otherwise known as father (Will Forte) in the woods, and has been told never to venture outside the safety of their home. However, the temptation of finding his mother leads him to leave the only place he has ever known, and throw himself into the scary world beyond the fences.
Nonso Anozle as Tommy
Once a famous football player but, post-apocalypse, Tommy is now a lone ranger and faces the dangers of the Earth alone as the darkness of his past shrouds him. After saving Gus from some hybrid poachers, Tommy struggles to rid himself of the deer-boy and finds himself with a new companion.
Stefania LaVie as Bear
Bear is a teenager who believes that the lives of hybrid children must be saved. She founded the Animal Army, a group of children who, like her, have been orphaned. She believes that the virus is nature’s way of healing the damage done to the Earth.
The Animal Army dress like animals (hence the name) and use guerrilla tactics to fight against those who wish to hunt and kill hybrids.
Dania Ramirez as Aimee Eden
Aimee Eden used to be a councillor who felt trapped in her own skin but, when a hybrid baby is left on her doorstep, she begins to see past herself and realises how much danger the poor hybrids are in.
After the apocalypse hit, Aimee sets up a safe haven for all hybrid children within the confines of a zoo, in an effort to keep them all safe. When the outside world threatens to violate the haven she has set up, it falls to her to keep the hybrids within safe.
Adeel Akhtar as Doctor Singh
Before finding himself in the middle of the fray trying to find a cure for the world-eating virus, Singh was an ordinary doctor with simple problems.
Rani, Singh’s wife, is kept alive using experimental treatments that were developed at hideous costs. When the local doctor retires and leaves all her work to Singh, he must choose between the love he has for his wife, and his ethics.
Neil Sandilands as General Abbott
As with many shows, the apocalypse and the broken hierarchy system paves way for someone to appoint themselves leader, and in Sweet Tooth, this person is General Abbott.
Abbott seems to be your classic villain; he believes that the hybrids are only useful for two things: extermination or experimentation. He is the big bad wolf here, and appears to challenge every character in the sense that while others are working to save hybrids, Abbott’s forceful ways may prove tough to fight against.
Sweet Tooth is available to watch now, exclusively on Netflix!
