The 36-year-old actress - who has played Leanne Battersby on the ITV soap for 18 years - described the first dramatic moments of the dark storyline that will see her 12-year-old stepson, Simon, become the perpetrator of domestic abuse.

Leanne is seen cowering after Simon screams and throws something at her, though Jane revealed: "It was a rubber remote ... but it didn't actually hit me to be fair."

Leanne became the sole guardian of Simon - played by Alex Bain - when her ex-husband Peter Barlow left Weatherfield last year and bosses of the ITV soap revealed the parent-child domestic abuse story-line in March.

It follows Simon's own brush with abuse, having previously been bullied by schoolgirls Faye Windass (Ellie Leach) and Grace Piper (Ella-Grace Gregoire).

Speaking on ITV's 'This Morning', Jane - whose on-screen fiance Kal Nazir died in the dramatic fire storyline last week - continued: "I think in his young life he's lost so many people close to him, his mum, his dad left, Kal died. At some point in the story it will play out that [his grandma] Deirdre [Barlow] has died. So it's his way of dealing with that and unfortunately that means Leanne is on the tail-end."

Kal's death is the latest in a long line of failed romances for Leanne and Jane has admitted that while she'd love for her character to find someone and live happily ever after, she thinks it's unlikely.

The blonde beauty added: "I'd like her to find some happiness because I'm always crying! Which is great to play out ... I would like her to find some happiness at some point but I don't think she is one of those characters. Somehow she sort of muddles through on her own at the best of times so we'll see in the future."
