“American Idol” This week saw the final five sing twice on Wednesday night, something not lost on Jacob Lusk or Haley Reinhart.
Both made bad choices for the first round, with Lusk singing Jordin Sparks-Chris Brown “No Air” duet and strangley singing both roles, which seemed and proved to be the wrong choice. Reinhart meanwhile who may still be stinging from the remarks made by mentor Jimmy Iovine who called into question her direction as a singer.
Iovine suggested she sing an unreleased Lady Gaga track which she accepted without question, what Iovine was thinking about I do not know.
Reinhart closed the show with The Animals’ “House of the Rising Sun” earning a standing ovation from the judges and the audience for what was the top performance of the night and she deserves to get through.
Lusk meanwhile gave a lack lustre performance of “Love Hurts” which was better than his first but only just and should not be surprised if he is in trouble this week.
Scotty McCreery Lauren Alaina and James Durbin all recieved high praise from the panel. Scotty McCreery excelled again his stage presence is that of a seasoned performer rather than a 17 year old. His opener, Montgomery Gentry’s version of “Gone.” was followed by an accomplished version of “Always on My Mind”.
Lauren Alaina took a song from former “Idol” winner, Carrie Underwood's. “Flat on the Floor” which was welcomed by the audience and judges alike. Then her “Unchained Melody,” was her best performance to date.
Durbin took on 30 Second to Mars’ “Closer to the Edge,” with the second choice “Without You” the first was his best although the audience did not seem to get it, then 'without you' came over as a struggle vocally.
This week’s guest mentor was Sheryl Crow she advised Reinhart to start her “House of the Rising Sun” a capella.
