With songs from such an iconic singer it was imperetive that the contestants put their own spin on the songs, otherwise the performances would sound kareoke.
For instance country singer Scotty McCreery couldn’t find a lot of obvious country numbers to choose from and ended up picking “You’ve Got a Friend” which with his distinctive vocals he was able to place a coutry spin. The down side was although it very much looks as if he take most any song and fit it into his comfort zone, the reverse is not an option as our Scotty can only and will only sing country.
Another interesting challenge was laid at James Durbins door, Carole King did not write any metal but he gave his own treatment to her first major songwriting hit, “Will You Still Love Me Tomorrow.”
Jennifer Lopez loved it Randy Jackson was also impressed, saying that the rocker had proved he’s a great singer. “You know what I think, guys? This guy might win the whole thing!” one for overstatement is our Randy..
Lauren Alaina turned out arguabley the strongest performance despite Miley Cyrus crashing her session with mentor Jimmy Iovine. “You will always hear mean comments,” Cyrus informed Alaina, just why she did is anyones guess, but she did.
Guest mentor Kenneth “Babyface” Edmonds gave her some most constructive advice telling Alaina to Trust Her Abilities and Go For It”
Alaina took Kings “Where You Lead (I Will Follow),” dragging a teenage male fan onstage for greater effect, this was not needed as her performance was a winner.
So who is in danger after Wednesdays show Alaina, Durbin or McCreery should all be pretty much sure of progressing leaving Haley Reinhart, Casey Abrams, and Jacob Lusk feeling twitchy.
Steven Tyler loved Haley Reinhart stating “I just saw God. I heard God in your voice,” when she sang “Beautiful.” Reinhartfaired the best of the three but she also has the least margin for error of anyone.
Casey Abrams meanwhile struggled with “Hi-De-Ho (That Old Sweet Roll) - a performance that was over the top and corny self-indulgent, although needless to say the panel loved him.
Jacob Lusk was in even deeper trouble with “Oh No, Not My Baby” weak vocally the performance lacked any zest or colour..
On the night the “Idol” six each sang a duet. Why is another mystery, though it was a time filler, and thats all because none of the duets really worked for any of the contestants.
Abrams-Reinhart sang “I Feel the Earth Move.” which was the most entertaining of the night and thats it!
McCreery and Alaina - their voices don’t harmonise with. “Up on the Roof” was fine, and wasn’t as good as either of their solos.
Durbin and Lusk had to sing “I’m Into Something Good” with each other a cruel trick pulled by the producers so no marks for either and a big fat '0' for the show
