Pia Toscano's elimination may have been a shock to many of the shows fans but to those who have followed the seasons it is all too predictable, she sits on the wrong side of the gender line
The home voting audience is predominantly female and most likely teenagers and as the saying goes girls don't like girls
Season after season the trend on "Idol", whose audience is overwhelmingly female has followed the same path as girls don't vote for the female contestants. Take the psychology and blame it on same-gender envy or the 'boy' factor with this season's prime beneficiaries: Scotty McCreery and Paul McDonald - but it's simply a fact of "Idol". One by one, the girls get pruned from the tree.
The other over-riding issue this season has been a total lack of guidance from the new judges in particular and even now from the seasoned Randy Jackson, they just exude positives. This leaves the audience seemingly unsure of who to vote for. It's not like the show needs a Simon Cowell, but when you're faced with the decision of choosing the best in a group of greats, some professional insight is called for and these judges are failing on that front.
But it might just have been a case of everybody being so universally convinced that a contestant would win, that they basically failed to vote for that finalist.
