Idol gives back is about asking its viewers to open their wallets for worthy causes in the United States and in Africa, add to this some celebrity performances, some 'ribbing' of the judges before culminating with one unfortunate contestant taking the quick route home. .
Of the acts, Mary J. Blige sang a top class version of "Stairway to Heaven," while both Joss Stone and Carrie Underwood produced classy performances along with Fergie, though the best performance came from this weeks Idol mentor Alicia Keys.
Other distractions were Elton John embarressing himself by getting the URL of his own website wrong, Annie Lennox had to perform from overseas, due to the volcanic ash and the flight bans in Europe.
Ryan then finally wrapped things up by saying goodbye to Tim Urban - just how that will sit with his fans who donated we will wait and see.
So who was it that ended in the bottom three and had to endure the long wait - Urban, Kelly and Casey James were announced as the bottom three, this week Aaron Kelly survived, but he was the weakest this week and looks likely to be the next elimination.
