Bowersox had been the better performer throughout the season, she was a polished stage a much better artist and most importantly a world class singer. Trying justify the result Dewyze was at his strongest in the weeks leading up to the finale, staying within his comfort zone and taking no risks.
Dewyze was unable to match Bowersox on Tuesday but it would appear that the Idol audience only has ears for one type of music and that doesn't include female artists, no wonder Simon Cowell is leaving the show. The last woman to win idol was Jordin Sparks, last season saw Kris Allen beat Adam Lambert, season seven saw David Cook beat David Archuleta sorry girls forget the dream if it depends on Idol.
What makes this result unbelievable is that Dewyze didn't save his best for last. Crystal Bowersox outshone him on every level Tuesday, and to add to it Dewyze failed miserably with his duet with Chicago on Wednesday producing in my opinion the worst performance ever given by an Idol finalist. In contrast Bowersox sang "You Oughta Know" with Alanis Morissette, and unsurprisingly equalled her duet partner vocally.
But lets not forget this was also Simon Cowells last show and the highlight after the disappointment of the results were the tributes to the man that has made American Idol the success it has become.
Appearances by seven of the eight former champions David Cook couldn't make it and many of the prominent finalists from recent years. This was topped by former judge Paula Abdul giving touching tribute to her friend and fellow judge. The Ryan Seacrest - Simon Cowell insult exchange was also put on hold last night - Simon was nothing but nice.
Like all the previous finales, the "Idol" the show was full of big names, though curiously after trying to appeal to the younger audience Wednesdays performers were all relics from typical Idol viewers Grandpa's - Bee Gees, Hall and Oates, Michael McDonald, Alice Cooper, Joe Cocker ... does anyone under the age of fifty remember any of these guys?
Special note though,Bret Michaels continued his remarkable recovery by sharing the stage with Casey James for "Every Rose Has Its Thorn." not a great duet, but nobody cared because it was just nice to see that Michaels was healthy enough to perform
