American Idol

American Idol

American Idol” What is it with the judging panel this season, or more to the point what actually is their function. The reason I ask is previously they would criticise bad performances, offer advice on how the contestants could improve, but now it would seem every contestant is perfect, every contestant is an 'idol', every contestant is on a par with the worlds great performers.

This then begs another question what is the point of American Idol why not just have twelve shows where no one is voted off, the contestants all get lucrative contracts and the all go on to displace the industries greats. Well that is how it seems this season as the judges once again loved every single one of the performances on Wednesday night.

The singers picked selections from artists honored by the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame, and following the judges' comments it would seem it would only be a matter of months before this group were voted in the 'Hall'.

In fact the only negative feedback of the night came from Randy Jackson who said of Stefano Langone, “I wasn’t jumping up and down over it,” but his fellow judges must have been as he was immediately corrected by Steven Tyler and Jennifer Lopez.

At the close of the performance the panel said they had no idea who American should vote for, since everyone was just, well awesome. So no direction there then, it’s up to the viewer, how Cowell must be cringing.

Paul McDonald. McDonald, produced an awfull rendition of Folsom Prison Blues, but even that was praised believe it or not by Tyler for being imperfect, Cash may have been turning in his grave at that arrangement,

Langone was no better with his version of the classic “When a Man Loves a Woman” by Percy Sledge, Casey Abrams and Jacob Lusk turned in lack lustre performances — Abrams with "Have You Ever Seen the Rain" by Creedence Clearwater Revival, and Lusk with Michael Jackson's "Man in the Mirror" — while Haley Reinhart with Janis Joplin's "Piece of My Heart," was too forgettable.

Our favorite Pia Toscano showed the rest how it should be done as she went up-tempo with a top class version “River Deep, Mountain High” by Tina Turner. She both looked and sounded like a star, she was exceptional.

James Durbin, did at least try with his version of “While My Guitar Gently Weeps” by George Harrison. It was slower than the rest of the numbers, but hit the right tempo.

Scotty McCreery with “That’s All Right, Mama” by Elvis while not his best should see him through . Tyler thought the teen was “all hat, no cattle” make of that what you want!

Lauren Alaina, who took the path Simon Cowell always hated - being a teenager and the youngest female in the competition she chose to sing  Aretha Franklin's “(You Make Me Feel like a) Natural Woman.”. Too old for you springs to mind, but that said she did a good job on the number.

Gwen Stefani dropped in on the “Idol” set, no mentoring this time, luckily for the contestants after her last attempt. She did offer style tips for the women,

Will.i.am also appeared he was alongside Iovine in the mentoring chair. The Black Eyed Pea is becoming a regular during season 10,
