The residents of Springfield are to return to FOX for at least another two seasons, with the broadcaster announcing the news and confirming that it would run through until spring 2017.
In the press release from FOX, Homer Simpson himself sums up the news and the existence of the show: "I've outlasted Letterman, Jon Stewart and 'McDreamy,' because I have something they don't: a costly 200-donut-a-day addiction."
Nearly three decades into its record-breaking run, The Simpsons has remained one of the highest-rated FOX shows around, and with seasons 27 and 28 now a definite, the show will be taken past the 600 episode milestone drawing it towards another all-time record in television history.
Getting to season 21, The Simpsons has passed Law & Order and Gunsmoke as the weekly primetime scripted series with the all-time most seasons. Gunsmoke still holds the record total of episodes with 635, but season 28 of The Simpsons will push it to 625 episodes, meaning that if 29 is confirmed - which is likely - it'll break another record in 2018.
With supporting cast members being lost in the past such as the late Marcia Wallace, there's still the top-billed voice cast lending their talents to the show including Julie Kavner, Dan Castellanetta, Nancy Cartwright, Hank Azaria, Harry Shearer and Yeardley Smith.
The Simpsons continues on FOX in America, Sundays at 8pm and broadcasts on Sky 1 in the UK.
