The 30-year-old actress plays Yasmin Khan in the science fiction show alongside Jodie Whittaker's new Time Lord and fellow companions Graham O'Brien (Bradley Walsh) and Ryan Sinclair (Tosin Cole), and she revealed it is a role that always seemed out of reach.

Appearing on ITV's 'This Morning', she said: "Absolutely not, no.I did 'Casualty' the same year I got 'Doctor Who', and I was walking down a corridor and the girl politely said 'We don't go through that entrance, that's 'Doctor Who'.'

"In my head I was like, yeah, I would never go through that door, I'm never going to do that job."

Mandip has loved her time on the hugely popular BBC show, but she is staying tight lipped when it comes to the possibility of staying on for another series.

Refusing to give a hint about how the current run will end, she added: "I don't know if there's another series [for me]. Who knows where we end up at the end of this one?"

She also teased the possibility of the show exploring a romance between Yas and Ryan, and admitted while she wouldn't "rule it out", her character can sometimes see him as "an annoying brother".

She said: "I'm not going to rule it out. Never say never. "At this point it's a little bit fun. I just think they're trying to find their feet in this world, but there's sometimes when she finds him really annoying, like an annoying brother."
