The 35-year-old actress - who has replaced Peter Capaldi as the iconic Time Lord for the upcoming series - is to follow in the footsteps of fashionistas like Beyonce and Kim Kardashian West in her appearance on the BBC sci-fi show.

A source explained: "In the past, Doctor Who would keep his sonic screwdriver, Jelly Babies, timepiece and yo-yos in his waistcoat or coat pocket.

"So the question was: 'Where will Jodie keep all her accessories - including, maybe, a lipstick?'"

TV bosses decided the new Doctor wasn't suited to carrying an expensive, impractical bag.

The insider told the Daily Star newspaper: "We couldn't imagine she would carry a Hermes bag. So it was a no-brainer that she would have a bumbag instead."

Jodie has been cast as the first-ever female Doctor and the programme's new showrunner, Chris Chiball, is also eyeing a number of additional changes for the upcoming series.

An insider previously said: "Chris is taking 'Doctor Who' apart to give it a revamp. The only things viewers will immediately recognise are the sonic screwdriver, the TARDIS and the theme tune."

Other new faces added to the show include Bradley Walsh, Tosin Cole and Mandip Gill, while Olivia Colman - who worked with Chibnall on 'Broadchurch' - could also make an appearance.

The acclaimed actress recently admitted that she and the showrunner have "talked" about her joining the programme - but only if he agrees to let her play a "horrible baddie".

Olivia said: "We've already talked about it. I want to play a really horrible baddie ... whether or not it fits in ...

"It's a bit much to just ask someone, 'Can I be in it?'"
