Debuting last year, HBO crime drama True Detective was one of the most successful shows for some time, earning Emmy nominations for lead actors Woody Harrelson and Matthew McConaughey and becoming the subject of conversations around the globe in a way just a few series have managed to do.

Hype and anticipation for the anthology series to makes its comeback this year was through the roof but when the second season did begin, many fans and critics were hugely negative about the show's new narrative, acting and writing. It's not a completely hated show and it's still managed to gain scores in the 60s on review aggregators, but the problem lies in that it's not living up to the first.

Asked to weigh in on the subject in Los Angeles during a TCA press event, HBO president Michael Lombardo took the opportunity to defend the show, saying he is "enormously proud" of the second season and considers the upcoming finale "as satisying as any I've seen".

He went on to say that writer and creator Nic Pizzolatto is a "bold storyteller", and he's never felt the need to "micromanage" the creative process Pizzolatto goes through.

Speaking about a third season, Lombardo says that the "door is open" and he'd love to "do another season" with Pizzolatto onboard - so it looks like here it's the rare opportunity for the show's writer to choose.

True Detective season 2 continues Sundays on HBO in the US and Mondays on Sky Atlantic in the UK.
