'Coronation Street', 'EastEnders' 'Hollyoaks' and 'Casualty' all picked up nods in the category ahead of this year's ceremony, which will air on Sunday 6th June 2021 on BBC One.

But last year's winner 'Emmerdale' - which beat off competition from 'Casualty', 'Corrie' and 'Holby' in 2020 - won't be able to defend its crown this time around after failing to pick up a nod.

'Emmerdale' has three wins to its name since the category began in 1999, and 'Holby' has one from 2008.

'EastEnders' holds the record with nine Soap and Continuing Drama gongs, three ahead of 'Corrie'.

And the BBC One soap could pick up two BAFTA TV Awards this year as the show also has a nod in the public-voted Must-See Moment category.

The soap has been nominated for the chilling scene in which evil character Gray Atkins (Toby-Alexander Smith) killed his wife Chantelle Atkins (Jessica Plummer) as part of a hard-hitting domestic violence storyline.

But the soap will face stiff competition from Diversity's Black Lives Matter-inspired 'Britain's Got Talent' routine; 'Bridgerton' character Penelope Featherington being unveiled as the show's narrator Lady Whistledown; 'Gogglebox' reactions to a Boris Johnson press conference; Nigella Lawson's unusual pronunciation of microwave on 'Cook, Eat, Repeat'; and Luke Skywalker's appearance in 'The Mandalorian'.

In 2019, 'Emmerdale' was snubbed for a nod in the Soap & Continuing Drama category, and one of the show's stars, James Hooton (Sam Dingle), questioned why the soap had missed out.

In response to a tweet from BAFTA which revealed 'Casualty', 'Coronation Street', 'EastEnders' and 'Hollyoaks' had received nods in the category, he wrote: "Where's emmerdale? (sic)"

'EastEnders' ended up winning the 2019 accolade, but the soap wasn't nominated the following year.
