Doon Mackichan and Tom Rosenthal in Plebs

'Plebs' is to return for a second series.

Stars of the ITV2 sitcom - which is based on the comical goings on of fictional young residents of ancient Rome, who are trying to climb the social ladder in the big city - will start filming the second season in the autumn ahead of an expected broadcast in spring 2014.

Doon Mackichan - who plays sexually frustrated boss Flavia in the comedy show - told RadioTimes.com: "We are really pleased to be going back to it - it really picked up a momentum when it aired."

Plans for the show's return will no doubt please 'Friday Night Dinner' actor Tom Rosenthal - who portrays Marcus in 'Plebs' - as he recently told how he had a great time shooting the first series and hoped the programme would be recomissioned.

Speaking to BANG Showbiz, he said: "'Plebs' was great, we loved filming it. The cast were such a good laugh."

Tom and Doon appeared in the first series alongside 'Trollied' star Joel Fry (Stylax) and 'After You've Gone' actor Ryan Sampson (Grumio), as well as Gavin and Stacey's Adrian Scarborough.
