Fiona Allen has confirmed that the creators of 'Smack The Pony' are "currently working on a reunion".
The 53-year-old actress - who starred in the hit Channel 4 comedy sketch show alongside Doon Mackichan and Sally Phillips which ran between 1999 and 2003 - has spilled that the team are planning on bringing back the programme with a modern twist.
Speaking to The Guardian newspaper Fiona revealed the comic trio are "currently working on reunion projects".
Sally Phillips light-heartedly added: "I think the time has perhaps come for an entirely period-based sketch show: The Big Red One. We used to joke about that. No, I'm still joking."
Looking back on how 'Smack The Pony' started, Doon said that they wanted create something that was fresh and was like no other female comedy and avoid "overt stereotypes about women and periods".
She said: "We wanted to try and break from what had traditionally been female comedy which was exceedingly limited ... 'French and Saunders', basically. We didn't want what was the traditional male format and staying away from overt stereotypes about women and periods, chocolate, diets etc was vehemently agreed by all at the onset."
'Smack The Pony' creator Victoria Pile also commented that the show was a "brilliant outlet" for writers and gave creative women the opportunity to express their thoughts and promote themselves to the same status as men.
She said: "It was a brilliant outlet for writers, male or female, who didn't know where to voice their often fairly peculiar thoughts.
"That was the overriding mission. Not to banner-wave or trash men, but to promote women as being as good as or better than! In the context of opportunities for funny women on TV at the time, this was a vital task."
