The 32-year-old actress - who plays police detective Yasmin Khan on the BBC sci-fi show - has admitted there's no guarantee her alter ego will survive past the end of the current season, with Jodie Whittaker being the only cast member confirmed for series 13.

Speaking to RadioTimes.com, Mandip said: "I'd love to [come back]. But agian, because of the secrecy no one ever knows what's going on.

"I'm just happy to have been part of two [series], and to have been able to explore Yaz. But I would love to be part of it."

Her comments come after series producer Tracie Simpson is said to have suggested filming for the upcoming season could start in September this year, with a potential premiere date in 2021 - although an official date is yet to be confirmed.

Meanwhile, Jodie recently revealed she will be back for the next run of episodes as the titular Time Lord.

She confirmed: "I'm doing another season. That might be a massive exclusive that I'm not supposed to say, but it's unhelpful for me to say [I don't know] because it would be a massive lie!

"I absolutely adore it. At some point, these shoes are going to be handed on, but it's not yet. I'm clinging on tight!"

While Mandip insisted she doesn't know if she'll be back, it's also unclear if co-stars Bradley Walsh (Graham) or Tosin Cole (Ryan) will return.

However, Chris Chibnall will definitely be back as showrunner following rumours of a possible exit last year.

He previously said: "It's categorically untrue [that I'm leaving]. We're already planning the next series after this [12th] series."
