Series producer Tracie Simpson is said to have suggested that filming for the next series of the BBC sci-fi show could start in the autumn, according to RadioTimes.com.

And it is thought the show are aiming for a 2021 premiere date for its next series.

However, an official date is yet to be confirmed.

The news comes after Jodie Whittaker confirmed she will be back for the next run of episodes as the titular Time Lord.

She said last month: "I'm doing another season. That might be a massive exclusive that I'm not supposed to say, but it's unhelpful for me to say [I don't know] because it would be a massive lie!

"I absolutely adore it. At some point, these shoes are going to be handed on, but it's not yet. I'm clinging on tight!"

It is yet unclear if any other of the regular cast members, Bradley Walsh (Graham), Mandip Gill (Yaz) and Tosin Cole (Ryan) will return.

What's more, Chris Chibnall will also be returning as showrunner following rumours of his possible exit last year.

He previously said: "It's categorically untrue [that I'm leaving].

"We're already planning the next series after this [12th] series."

The series 12 finale will give answers about the Timeless Child.

Chris opened up about what fans can expect from the upcoming two-parter - 'Ascension of the Cybermen' and 'The Timeless Children' - and how the last episode in particular is an "emotional" end to season 12.

He said: "I can't tell you anything about this episode. The Timeless Child is mentioned as far back as 'The Ghost Monument' [in 2018], and the final episode of this series is where some of those questions get answered.

"It's a huge, emotional finale with lots of Cybermen. And it runs for 65 minutes. It's both epic, and personal.

"This is what you're always looking for in a series finale - the way the big, universe-threatening story impacts on the personal lives of your characters. And categorically that's what's happening in this episode."
