'Coronation Street's Maria Connor is set to miscarry in heartbreaking scenes.
The hairdresser, played by Samia Longchambon, is devastated when doctors reveal she has lost her baby after complaints of feeling unwell.
A source said: "Just as Maria and Gary appear to have ridden the storm of Christmas, they are dealt this devastating blow and left completely heartbroken. Having a family with Maria seemed an opportunity for Gary to finally put an end to his criminal activities. And for Maria, settling down with a man who loves her and son Liam is everything she has always dreamed of. Their happy-ever-after is so brutally ripped away from them."
Maria has seen heartbreak before after losing a baby 11 years ago with her then-husband Liam Connor whilst Gary Windass (Mikey North) has experienced equal heartache when his ex Izzy miscarried their child in 2012.
The insider added to Inside Soap magazine: "Maria blames herself and opens up to Ali about her history - explaining she can't deal with losing another child. Meanwhile, Gary is on his way home, oblivious that he's returning to a world of pain. This is make or break for Gary and Maria, and will force them to pull their relationship into sharp focus. Are they committed to having a future together, or was the baby the only reason they've come as far as they have?"
Doctor Ali Neeson (James Burrows) rushes Maria to hospital for a scan after she starts bleeding and feeling dizzy. And when her symptoms are looked into more, it is revealed she has contracted measles, something which she wasn't immunised against as a child. She starts beating herself up about it, only to then realise that Bertie, Daniel's son, is in hospital with the disease as he didn't complete the baby's series of jabs. With both Maria and Gary furious about the events that have happened, the builder heads straight over to find Daniel and blame him face to face for what happened, leaving fans questioning how Gary and Maria might cope with their loss and if their relationship will survive.
