FOX have announced that American Idol will no longer be on the air following the end of season 15, revealing today that the upcoming American Idol season will be it's last. Beginning to air from January 2016, longtime host Ryan Seacrest is back for its final outing alongside current judges Jennifer Lopez, Keith Urban and Harry Connick, Jr. Serving as a "celebratory event", the final episodes will pay tribute to fans, past contestants and winners.

Since its debut in 2002, American Idol has been a staple in FOX's lineup and has included the likes of Simon Cowell, Randy Jackson and Paula Abdul in its time, as well as Mariah Carey, Nicki Minaj and Steven Tyler. Acting as the major launch pad for Ryan Seacrest, he became a huge fixture on television and radio.

Big singers have also come out of the show including Adam Lambert, Katharine McPhee, Jennifer Hudson, Kelly Clarkson, Carrie Underwood, Chris Daughtry, Jordin Sparks, Phillip Phillips and more.

In its fourteenth season, Idol was paired with Empire which saw it gain some good ratings, but on its first night alone without the juggernaut music drama, it dropped 26%.
