Loki, the next Marvel show set to debut after The Falcon and The Winter Soldier, has been pushed back – but not by long. We can now expect to see Tom Hiddleston in the titular role come June 11th, on Disney+.
As Marvel’s third show to hit Disney+ this year, Loki is rumoured to have six episodes which are involved in the next phase for the Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU).
In regards to casting, we of course know Hiddleston will be reprising his role as the mischievous titular God, but who else is joining him?
Not much has been revealed cast-wise, but from the trailer of the show we can see one very recognisable face. Owen Wilson will be joining the roster for Loki, playing Mobius M. Mobius.
Mr. Mobius, as he is sometimes called, is a character from the comics we haven’t seen yet in live-action. He first appeared in a 1991 comic book titled Fantastic Four #353 – we already know the Fantastic Four will be in the MCU, based on Kevin Feige’s announcement on December 11th 2020.
People are, however, continuing to theorise how these characters will be indoctrinated into the MCU.
It is improbable that the scientific foursome will appear in Loki, as they are set to get their own movie at some point – that doesn’t rule them out of the show, but it does seem too soon for them to make an appearance.
In regard to plot, once again there isn’t a whole lot to go off of, but we can be sure that Loki has not changed his wicked ways.
We know that the events of the TV series will follow the aftermath of what we saw in Avengers: Endgame, when some of the Avengers went back in time to steal the Tesseract from themselves. The plan goes slightly wrong, and Loki ends up escaping with the Infinity Stone.
Now, it seems Loki is free as a bird, and getting into all sorts of trouble – exactly what we want to see from Hiddleston’s portrayal of Loki. The escape we see in Avengers: Endgame is said to create an alternate timeline, where the new series will be set.
Since WandaVision brought us S.W.O.R.D, an agency which aims to observe sentient weapons, (so Wanda, played by Elizabeth Olsen, for example), it seems Loki will introduce yet another organisation within the MCU.
It seems Loki will be introducing us to the T.V.A – the Time Variance Agency.
The TVA essentially do what it says on the tin. They monitor timelines – this is where Owen’s Mobius comes into play.
We see that Loki has been captured by the TVA. However, it wouldn’t be crazy to assume he won’t be there long, given his notorious ability to escape.
Through the montage we can see in the trailer, full of snippets we can expect to see in the show, there is one short clip that catches the eye; amidst a purple background, we see a feminine figure with short hair sitting and staring at the sky.
This is simply a theory, but this figure looks an awful lot like Scarlett Johansson’s Black Widow…
Another shot within the trailer shows Loki on a plane, saying “Brother, Heimdall, you better be ready”. Many fans believe, and it’s a pretty solid theory, that in this scenario, Loki is indeed D. B. Cooper – a criminal who stole money, hijacked a plane, and then jumped out of said aircraft.
Cooper could not have survived the jump without a parachute – but his remains were never recovered. After we hear Loki speak to his brother, Thor (Chris Hemsworth), and Heimdall (Idris Elba), he then jumps out of the plane and is indeed caught by the Bifrost – money is left floating in the sky after he disappears…
Loki is set to be a marvellous series, especially after the success of WandaVision and the excitement for The Falcon and The Winter Soldier. Plus, with Hiddleston’s Loki being a fan-favourite, everyone is excited to see what the God of mischief will get up to in his very own show.
