The 80’s Still Head And Shoulder Pads Above The Rest
London. Thursday 19 May 2011. A new survey commissioned by CBS Drama has revealed that we are a nation of nostalgics. Modern trends in food, music, clothes and drama have been given the thumbs down in favour of retro favourites and childhood obsessions.
Current couture is canned with a whopping 87% of men and women confessing their love of 80’s fashion, citing much-maligned leg warmers, ra-ra skirts and fingerless gloves as the fashion they miss most.
In music, almost thirty years after its release, Dexys Midnight Runners’ 80’s classic, Come on Eileen, is the number one track to make both sexes hit the dancefloor (26%). But, bad news for Britney, her iconic 90’s hit, Hit Me Baby One More Time polled only 5% of the vote.
With 45% of us choosing a night in front of the box over going dancing, cooking or playing computer games, it’s no wonder that 87% of respondents claimed the microwave oven was the innovation that changed their lives the most, with the then revolutionary video recorder only managing 61%, and the answerphone trailing in third place with just 23%.
Despite the emphasis on healthier, leaner cuisine, 70% of us still hanker after childhood comfort foods Angel Delight, Arctic Roll, Crispy Pancakes and Spaghetti Hoops. And 88% of us loved Sherbert Dib Dabs and Flying Saucers the most.
Alina Florea, Director of Programming, said: “CBS Drama is about savouring again the shows of our youth. This survey confirms that we all want to spend quality time with the things we’ve always loved, be it food, fashion music or drama”
When asked what shows they missed on TV, surprisingly, 28% of men would love to see the original series of Starsky and Hutch again, unsurprisingly, closely followed by Baywatch (20.5%). Women on the other hand, would rather see Bad Girls (24%), followed by iconic drama series Dallas (20%).
According to the poll, the most recognisable TV theme tunes are Star Trek (38.8%), followed by Dallas (30.7%). Despite Bad Girls being the show most women want to see again, only 5.6% of us recognise the theme tune.
The survey was commissioned by CBS Drama, home to many of our best-loved, nostalgic shows such as Starksy & Hutch, Dallas and Star Trek.
