Some Girls

Some Girls

Some Girls comes to BBC Three tonight and is the latest in the line of fantastically mucky female comedies following in the wake of the ground-breaking Bridesmaids.

Centring on the lives of four 16 year olds trying to get through high school and life on a London estate, the show’s sense of humour, love of profanity and frank discussions about sex have drawn many a comparison to the award winning and much loved show The Inbetweeners.

But while the Inbetweener’s boys were meek, mild things with a naughty streak, Some Girls’ ladies are anything but blushing violets. Foul mouthed, crude and sassy to just about anyone, they’re like the four guys with the wick turned up.

It would just be a bunch of crude sex jokes though if it wasn’t for the characters actually exhibiting some sort of depth, even in this world build episode we still get plenty of insight into their inner workings beyond a smutty punch line.

While the show’s first episode doesn’t quite have the same lightning rod affect that the Inbetweeners debut did, it’s still a very strong opening to a show that could have just been a mess if handled poorly.

BBC Three must be hoping that Bernadette Davis’ coming of age comedy hits the same sweet spot as E4’s stunner, because if it does, Some Girls could become the surprise hit of the year.
