The Macdonald New Blossoms Hotel in Chester was first opened in 1650, so is the oldest accommodation in the city, steeped in history and intrigue. With 67 individually decorated rooms, I was keen to discover what surprises it held inside.
The hotel is admittedly difficult to find, as it is in the heart of the city, so if you are not great with inner city driving I would suggest that you call reception and ask for directions as we found this very helpful. Leigh was very efficient in identifying where we were and helping us to find our way, as well as recommending overnight parking.
Although the hotel itself does not have parking, there is some a mere 5 minutes down the road attached the The Grosvenor Shopping Centre, costing £10.00 for 24 hours. This means after your stay you can still take the entire day to soak up the culture of Chester or do a spot of shopping.
Upon arrival while my partner was parking the car the General Manager Ian Griebenow greeted me and offered me a seat in the bar while I waited, after arranging for my luggage to be taken upstairs. It is very rare that I meet the manager of the hotel when I pay my visits so this was a welcome personal touch.
We were admittedly a little late, however we were assured not to rush for out dinner reservations, which allowed some time to settle into our room and get ready for our evening meal.
The superior room itself was large and boasted all of the signature features of the Macdonald hotels as a whole- namely the super-king bed and extra-long pillows. We were left a bottle of wine, a plate with chocolates and raspberries along with a welcome sign and a-personal message from the manger to thank us for our stay.
It had everything we needed for a comfortable stay and then some. With many of the original Victorian features, it blended both the old and new seamlessly in its décor, with long, heavy curtains in rich colours and dark wooden furniture. With a dressing table, seating area, ironing board, iron, bath robes, free WI-FI, complimentary bottle of water, large flat screen TV, tea and coffee making facilities and trouser press it excelled in its facilities.
The en-suite bathroom was large and boasted the option of a bath or a shower along with a selection of Pure products to indulge in.
The breakfast was in the Steak and Grill Restaurant, which had been transformed, from the evening, into a buffet of cereals, pastries juices and cold meats. We were brought toast and tea by Irvana and Faith gave us our cooked breakfast which was ordered from the menu.
With a central location and secure parking, there is no reason not to take advantage of a whole day in Chester following or before your stay. In easy reach of the pubs and clubs, if you feel like venturing out of the hotel, everything is easily accessed. Or if you want to stay on the premises, there is a bar, restaurant or room service- whatever suits your needs as a guest.
Despite being so close to the main high street of shops, the room was very quiet and so we enjoyed a restful and undisturbed night’s sleep.
The hotel also caters for business needs, weddings and offers the spa and relaxation facilities of its sister hotels nearby, such as Macdonald Craxton Wood. It is in close proximity to Liverpool Airport and Chester Racecourse too. Its advantages are endless, however what really made our stay complete was how friendly and approachable the staff were for our every need.
Thanks to Ian Griebenow, Leigh, Irvana, Faith and the rest of the staff who were involved in our time with you.
