The Macdonald Craxton Wood Hotel near Chester is nestled within 27 acres of woodland, boasting all the charm of a quaint country retreat while still maintaining a very high standard of a city centre hotel, seamlessly blending the old and the new. It is very easy to find via sat nav and well signposted from the road.
We were greeted by Head Receptionist Alison Roberts, who was extremely helpful with our stay. She offered us a newspaper, wake up call and gave us the option of a reservation in the restaurant or room service as we had not booked anywhere for our evening meal. She allowed us to take the menus up to our room so that we had the time to decide once we had checked and settled in.
The room was located in the older part of the traditional country house. It was large with everything we needed for a comfortable stay. A large bathroom with robes, slippers and plentiful supply of towels and toiletries, with sound piped in from the TV. There were handmade chocolates left for us upon a slate platter along with a stocked espresso machine and the usual coffee and tea making facilities. A bottle of still water was also provided along with glasses and the option to have a bucket of ice on request.
As we had sampled the restaurants in the Macdonald hotels before we were keen to see if their room service was just as good. We know that they pride themselves on quality British food so were looking forward to what was on offer.
I called down to the reception to order our meals, desserts and some drinks. The food came promptly and was of very high quality and appearance. The menu had a selection of traditional dishes with an unusual twist. I had a chicken breast with carrots, Parma ham and mushrooms, while my partner had a burger and beer battered fries, followed by a sticky toffee pudding with lashings of ice cream and pecans to decorate.
We enjoyed this in the small dining area within the room and the dessert arrived a mere 20 minutes after so they were still hot and we had had time to enjoy our main meal. Both waiters were friendly and discreet about coming into our room to deliver our meals and to take them away. Please note that a £3.00 service charge is added to the bill per trip or this luxury.
We enjoyed some television as there was a large screen TV in our bedroom with a selection of channels. The bed was extremely comfortable and the location meant a well needed quiet and relaxed night’s sleep was had by us both.
In the morning we were served by Pauline and Alex at breakfast. The food was buffet style and the cooked breakfasts were made to order. Again the food was cooked to perfection and there was an array of breakfast items catering for those who preferred a continental option as well as the traditional choice. We enjoyed this all while looking out from the conservatory onto the garden- a perfect way to start a Saturday morning!
I have to note for the purpose of the review that we didn’t receive our requested newspaper or our salad that we ordered, which were kindly taken off the bill by Sam when I challenged it the next day. I would urge this not to put you off, as these two minor instances did not detract from the overall experience of the stay.
With friendly staff; a quintessentially English setting and feel, it is no surprise what attracts guests to The Macdonald Craxton Wood Hotel. A mere 10 minutes from the centre of Chester it’s perfect for a shopping trip or to take in the charm of the historic town as well as being accessible from the motorway to go further afield.
There is a spa, gym sauna and swimming pool located within the Vital Health and Wellbeing Club, so even if your stay is a rainy one there is plenty to do in the grounds.
Thanks to Alison, Pauline, Alex, Sam and all the staff for a wonderful experience!
