Isle of Man

Isle of Man

Switch off from the hustle and bustle of modern living - this week marks the opening of all the Isle of Man’s major attractions.

From railways to waterwheels to castles, the variety of Island activities will ensure that everyone appreciates this oasis of calm in the Irish Sea.

Turn off all your gadgets, it’s time to embrace the rich history that the Isle of Man has to offer. The Island provides the perfect escape for those seeking to completely unwind; a frantic way of life may have become the norm for a lot of us, but a visit to the Island allows visitors to experience a more laid back pace of life.

The Isle of Man is only an hour away from most UK airports, and is home to an abundance of museums and heritage sites dotted around the Island.

All pay homage to the Isle of Man’s fascinating past and provide visitors with an insight into a time free from the trappings of modern life.

In the Island’s ancient capital of Castletown, one of  Europe’s best preserved medieval castles, Castle Rushen, is found.

Crossing the drawbridge leads you to an authentic environment straight from the Middle Ages, complete with its very own castle guards, and providing panoramic views over Castletown.

Those searching for further tranquillity can find it at the Cregneash Folk Village, another bastion of the Island’s heritage.

Isolated from the rest of the Island, the National Folk Museum provides a living, working illustration of life in a typical 19th century Manx community and continues to be farmed using traditional methods such as a horse plough.

Founded in 1134, the remains of Rushen Abbey are still standing and open to those wishing to explore the Island’s most important religious site. The Abbey Gardens are brimming with wild flowers and trees, making it a peaceful spot for a picnic.

To immerse yourself in nature and completely unwind, why not contemplate a farmstay? The combination of a high quality accommodation on a working farm along with the opportunity to sample local Manx food in the peaceful countryside, provides visitors with something a little different.

Cycling and walking are great ways to unwind as you take in the Island’s beautiful views. Breathtaking waterfalls, rugged pathways and terrain that varies from mountain to coast help to create the perfect getaway.

Meanwhile, for those seeking adventure, rock climbing, kayaking, gorge scrambling and quad-biking are just a few of the activities available on the Island.

Whether your idea of ‘switching off’ is a day of pure relaxation, or one filled with adrenaline, there is something on the Isle of Man for everybody
