Brits are saving money by haggling on holiday

Britains are beating the credit crunch and saving £1.7 billion each year by haggling on their holiday.

Research carried out by hotel website Hotels.com revealed the figure and found that 76% of Brits got a bargain on their last break. They calculated that the average traveller managed to save themselves £32.20 per holiday, a combined saving of £1.7 billlion per year.

It was also revealed that us Brits are no longer saving haggling for holiday souvenire but are demanding lower prices on a range of goods and services.

When it comes to clothing and souvenirs from markets, 82% haggle, which 34% haggle on the cost of hotel room upgrades, and 42% try to get lower prices on taxis and car hire.

Across Europe we are the best at sniffing out a bargain. While 76% of Brits regularly haggle, only 64% do in France and 61% in Spain. The Irish come in at the bottom with 56% of regular hagglers.

Alison Couper, Director of Communications at Hotels.com, says: “Haggling is fast becoming a buzz word for 2009. Whilst Brits have long been used to bartering for the occasional holiday souvenir, we are now seeing more people successfully wrangling over prices that previously would have seemed immovable.

Those who are willing to practise the art of haggling on their holiday are likely to find that their money will go even further.”
