Britain's Queen Elizabeth has made a personal donation to Typhoon Haiyan victims in the Philippines.

The 87-year-old monarch has expressed her "heartfelt condolences" to Philippine president Benigno Aquino III after his country was ravaged by the natural disaster over the weekend.

She wrote in a letter: "I was deeply saddened to hear of the loss of life and devastation caused by the typhoon that hit the Philippines at the weekend.

"Prince Philip joins me in offering our heartfelt condolences to the victims and their families at this difficult time.

"Our deepest sympathies go out to all those whose lives have been affected. Elizabeth R."

Meanwhile, Buckingham Palace has confirmed the queen has made a personal donation to help those affected by the typhoon, reports the Daily Express newspaper.

The queen is expected to resume official royal duties today (13.11.13) after being unable to take part in an investiture ceremony yesterday (12.11.13) due to a 'mild discomfort' in her ankle.

Prince William filled in for the monarch in knighting actor Sir Tony Robinson and honouring others.
