Drinking

The statistics reveal over 50% 15-year-old girls have been drunk at least twice, almost double the average in other wealthy countries.

A third of 13 to 15-year-olds have been incapably drunk at least twice, again the highest rate in the civilised world.

The research, which names Britain's teenage girls as the biggest binge-drinkers among rich, industrialised nations, was compiled by respected think-tank Demos.

It report continues to shock as it shows girls here are now more likely than boys to have been binge-drinking at least once in the last month. One third of teenage girls said they have been "intoxicated" in that period - second only to Denmark in Europe.

Also worrying to parents a shocking 11 per cent of teens admitted they had sex they later regretted while drunk. A quarter were injured or suffered an accident whilst drunk.

Twenty-seven per cent of girls aged 16 to 24 had gone binge-drinking in the last week, against just 17 per cent in 1998.

The report, using figures from a number of studies, showed one third of girls aged 11 to 21 had drunk so much they'd "lost control" or been sick.

Peer pressure exam worries relationship problems, and poor parental involvement is sited as major causes to teenage girls turning to the bottle aided by a lack of control over licensed properties selling to underage teens.

Demos deputy director Julia Margo told the press, "Across Europe, Britain has one of the worst problems with binge-drinking by teens - and girls here are drinking more than boys.

"This should worry ministers as the number of teenage girls that are also reporting that they are unhappy most of the time is on the increase."

Home Secretary Theresa May said: "These findings are further proof that Labour got it very wrong on alcohol."

Alcohol Concern chief executive Don Shenker said: "Ministers need to tackle this issue urgently."

Solutions under consideration are, raising the legal drink age as in much of the U.S. the legal age is 21, alcohol education in schools, advertising restrictions similar to those effecting tobacco ads, heavy penalties for selling to underage drinkers.
