The average UK mother spends four months of her life doing the ironing, according to new research by Philips PerfectCare.
The ongoing battle British mums face against their ironing pile is highlighted in this research, which shows that the average woman works her way through piles of ironing the height of almost four Empire State Buildings, during the course of her lifetime.
Despite more men taking on the role of househusband in the 21st Century, the survey of more than 1,000 mums discovered that women still do all of the ironing in four out of five households across the UK, with 39 per cent stating that their partner has never spent time in front of the ironing board.
It doesn’t appear as though mum is getting a helping hand from her offspring either, with only three per cent of British teenagers offering to help her out with the dreaded chore.
Gemma McHenry from Philips PerfectCare said: “There is a huge pressure on women of all ages to make sure they and their families look the part - it’s a sign of whether they are coping or not.
“Creased shirts are not an option and therefore these women find themselves constantly at the ironing board.”
So fed up are UK mothers with the arduous task that almost a third of mums claim they would happily pay someone to do their ironing for them, and one in five admit they purposely buy their child a school uniform that doesn’t require ironing in order to lighten the load.
Findings also showed that mums in Scotland have the biggest battle on their hands, with an average of 14.5 items sitting in their ironing pile at any one time, whilst those in London seem to be the laziest with just over a quarter of respondents saying they just don’t bother to do the ironing at all.
Gemma added: “For Mums who are after a quicker but effective solution to get through their ironing pile, the Philips PerfectCare Xpress is the world’s first pressurized steam iron with revolutionary OptimalTEMP technology.
“With one perfect temperature setting for all fabrics, your garments will be 100 per cent scorch proof meaning you can easily glide through your ironing pile without having to spend time sorting clothes, adjusting the irons temperature or waiting for it to heat up or cool down.”
