The app offers the chance to learn great cleaning tips from mums

Over half of the population (59 per cent) checks in with mum for advice on cleaning, cooking and childcare, while a third of the population (36 per cent) consults the internet, reveals a new survey from Smart Shoppers UK, an online community for savvy shoppers.

We have a direct line into mums who have been using our Facebook page for some time to share and collect all sorts of great advice.

The survey shows that a third of people in the UK now turn to social media channels for practical guidance on issues ranging from health and relationships to careers and finance. Furthermore, over a third (36 per cent) claim that the advice they get through the internet is as reliable, if not more reliable, than advice gleaned in person.

Combining mums and the internet, Matthew Betés, head of community at Smart Shoppers UK explains why the two work so well in tandem: “We have a direct line into mums who have been using our Facebook page for some time to share and collect all sorts of great advice.

"Thanks to the strength and quality of the information our community of mums are sharing, and the role both mums and the internet play when it comes to domestic advice, we’ve combined the two to create a dedicated SmartTips app, which allows our community to share their pearls of wisdom with an online audience, and vote on the best tips," he adds.

Just some of the great advice that has already been shared through SmartTips:

  • Fridge not so fresh? Cut a lemon in half, scoop out the flesh and fill it with table salt. Place in the egg tray and leave for 24 hours to remove all odours. Genius! (Tip from Smart Shoppers UK fan, Lynn Fancy).
  • Spray the front of your fridge/freezer with furniture polish and just lightly wipe over with a cloth. Don’t rub, by not rubbing you are leaving a protective film on the surface which makes it easier to clean in the future. (Tip from Smart Shoppers UK fan, Evie Moffat).
