Instead of face-to-to face conversation, many families now communicate through texting, calling, emails, texting, and social networking sites such as Facebook and Twitter.
In fact, the modern family keeps in touch via 1,768 texts, 520 emails and spends 68 hours on the phone to each other every year.
Worryingly, half of us will even text or call a family member in the same house as us, simply because we’re too lazy to get up and talk to them face-to-face.
A spokesman for Toshiba laptops, which commissioned the study, said, “As individuals, we are becoming busier than ever, but this means we aren’t always around to talk to our partner or children when we need to.
“And this means we are relying on other methods to keep in touch. A few texts, calls or emails here and there might not seem like that much, but when you add it up over the year, we spend a lot of time communicating with loved ones through more modern means.
“In fact, many parents may even speak to their children more over the phone or internet than they do face-to-face.
“But it’s worrying to see so many are even communicating this way when their partner or children are in the same building or even in the next room.”
Parents have embraced the new technology as a way to speak to their kids, with more than four in ten parents more likely to communicate with them through technology than face-to-face.
Although parents admit they will call people to do something or pick something up for them, 52 per cent said they are often calling to check up on family members.
When trying to get hold of their children, parents said they will mostly use texts but if this fails to work they will then call and email them.
Although, nearly three in ten parents said they have fallen out with their child or spouse if they haven’t replied to their texts!
