Having a mobile phone is seen as essential for most children these days. It lets them keep in touch with their parents easily and is equally good for parents to keep tabs on their child.
Despite this, the majority of parents aren’t keeping an eye on what their children are using the phone for despite knowing there are potential dangers.
Nearly six in ten parents admitted that they didn’t check their child’s phone activity, with the main reason being they never got round to it.
Other reasons included not wanting to invade their child’s privacy as well as parents trusting their children to be responsible.
Children as young as six were found to have a mobile phone, which becomes unsettling when you think how many parents admit to not checking them.
Mobileinsurance.co.uk asked parents whether they would know how to get access to their child’s phone, to which 79 per cent admitted they wouldn’t have a clue.
Shockingly, out of all the parents surveyed, only 3 per cent said they had an app that allowed them to track their child through their phone.
Jason Brockman, Director of mobileinsurance.co.uk, said, “To see that children as young as 6 are in possession of a mobile phone was pretty shocking.
“To be honest, I really can’t see a need for this and it isn’t very reassuring to know that many parents aren’t checking up on their child’s handset activity.
“It’s not a case of invading their privacy, but it should be seen as a way of keeping them safe.
“Parents should make sure that, if their children have access to the internet on their phones, adult content and websites are restricted and it’s also important to make sure they aren’t talking to strangers or being bullied.
“It’s always important to insure a mobile phone, but particularly if it’s used by a child.”
