Research reveals that on average, each parent is worth the equivalent to £55 a week in taxi fares.

Mums and dads across Britain are providing over £19 Billion worth of free taxi services for their kids Sainsbury’s Bank claims. This calculates at £36 a week extra in petrol, based on an average of 20 miles per week. Parents that are driving their children to out of school activities also spend on average an hour and half sitting in the car waiting for their children, which adds another £20 to the weekly bill.

Emily Fleming, a Sainsbury's Car Insurance Manager states: ‘Parents devote a huge amount of time taking their children to various extra-curricular activities and our research reveals that on average, each parent is worth the equivalent to £55 a week in taxi fares.’

To help parents with these costs, Sainsbury’s Bank has come up with a solution. They are offering new customers up to one third off their premium, and for those customers that take out a new comprehensive policy they will also be eligible for double Nectar points on their Sainsbury's shopping and fuel for two years. Moreover, the parents that are spending £49 a week in Sainsbury's could, over a year, earn Nectar points equivalent to the value of a week's free shopping.

The study also reveals that after a year, parents have reduced their mileage by up to 10%. The travelling distance has also decreased by an average of 244 miles compared to the previous 12 months. Another segment of the study revealed that a quarter of the parents said that the time that they spent with their child in the car strengthened their bond. As  well as being the perfect time to discuss difficult issues with their children as they believe that there are too many electronic distractions at home.

Sainsbury’s Bank has also created an online taxi calculator for parents that want to work out how much they actually spend whilst driving their children around. This can be found on the Sainsbury’s Bank website and is a valuable tool for parents who want to tighten up the purse strings.
