We’ve seen Kim and Kanye take trips to Paris and Brazil and more recently the Duke and Duchess of Cambridge flew to the Caribbean for some quality time away together.
But it’s not only expectant celebrity parents opting to take a ‘babymoon’ – a lavish holiday in the months leading up to the arrival of a baby – as this new parenting and travel trend has become increasingly popular with everyday couples too.
My advice would be to not leave it too late in the pregnancy to travel. Pick somewhere with plenty of relaxation, but also a few low-key activities to keep boredom at bay
In fact, two fifths of new mums and dads who recently had their first child, admitted to going on a holiday before the birth of their baby, as a chance to spend some time together prior to start of parenthood.
www.sunshine.co.uk polled 2,189 couples from around the UK, each of which had recently become parents for the very first time. The findings revealed a growing number of expectant parents taking a week or two away in the sun before the arrival of their little one.
However, a quarter of the respondents who claimed that they did take a ‘babymoon’ said that this was a holiday they had already booked, before finding out they were having a baby.
Meanwhile, 11 per cent said they always went away at that particular time of year regardless of whether they were expecting, and simply didn’t let the pregnancy stop their plans.
But a majority of 42 per cent said they wanted some alone time together before the baby came along. Respondents were then asked about their choice of destination for the ‘babymoon’ to which the most popular answers were Tenerife, Sardinia, Maldives, Portugal and Riviera Maya in Mexico.
Nearly two thirds of the couples surveyed admitted that, now the baby had arrived, they didn’t get to spend much alone time together.
Chris Clarkson, co-founder of sunshine.co.uk, said: “A babymoon is clearly the new honeymoon. I think it’s a good idea to spend a bit of quality time together in relaxing surroundings before your first baby comes along.
“It can be a big shock to the relationship, as you go from just the two of you to three.”
“My advice would be to not leave it too late in the pregnancy to travel. Pick somewhere with plenty of relaxation, but also a few low-key activities to keep boredom at bay.
“Most important, just enjoy each other’s company and make the most of the calm before the storm, as it were!”
