The average British household spends £2,467 a year on takeaway food - that’s £206 a month.
A Ruby Murry is still a firm favourite fast food choice for hungry Brits, only just pipped to the post by Chinese and Fish and Chips in the VoucherCodes.co.uk Takeout Chart.
Men are the biggest convenience food fiends, consuming an average of nine takeout meals a month – or 110 a year – compared to just 80 by women. Young professionals order the most takeaways, with 25-35 year olds chomping through over twice as many as those aged over 55.
Birmingham residents are the most likely to pick up food on the go, munching through an average of 11 takeaway meals each month per household. Leeds comes a close second, with the average resident ordering takeout 10 times every month – twice as often as diners in Portsmouth, the thriftiest city in the survey. Incredibly, the takeaway budget of an average Leeds family could keep three Portsmouth households in convenience food for a year.
Duncan Jennings, co-founder of VoucherCodes.co.uk said: “Takeaway meals are now part of everyday life for busy consumers and eating on the fly no longer needs to be an unhealthy or expensive option.
"Britain has always been a nation of food lovers and with nearly every type of cuisine available on the go throughout Britain’s city centres, it is no surprise to see consumers forking out so much on food each year. Whether eating out or eating in, there are some great deals online for anyone who fancies tucking into a tasty tandoori for National Curry Week," he added.
