The Duchess of Cambridge described finding out whether she was pregnant or not, as the “most nerve-racking moment” of her life, according to former school friend Jessica Hay.
The duchess - who announced her pregnancy last week - and husband Prince William found out they were expecting in October and it was a shocking moment for the royal.
Jessica claimed that Catherine - also known as her maiden name of Kate Middleton - took a pregnancy test while at the couple's three-bedroom cottage in Wales, and the couple celebrated with home-cooked shepherd's pie and an early night.
The pair had reportedly planned an official announcement at Christmas, but visited her parents - Carole and Michael Middleton - at their Berkshire home to tell them the news when the duchess became ill and had to be admitted to London's King George VII hospital for acute morning sickness.
Jessica told Australia's New Idea magazine: "She took to her bed for most of the weekend and on Monday morning, her mother and William told her she must get herself checked out by medics."
After being discharged last Thursday, William joked about the misleading name of his wife's recent illness.
Speaking at the Winter Whites Gala in Earls Court, London, for homeless charity Centrepoint - which he is a patron of - William said: "I don't know why they call it morning sickness - they should call it all day and all night sickness. It's a long old process but she is getting there. She feels like it is going to go on forever."
The prince was to originally attend the event with Catherine, but the duchess has cancelled all her royal engagements leading up to Christmas and has been given strict instructions by staff at London's King Edward VII hospital to rest and stay hydrated.
Since the duchess left for Kensington Palace to rest, the hospital's nurse Jacintha Saldanha - who answered a hoax call regarding the duchess's state from Australian radio DJs pretending to be William's grandmother Queen Elizabeth and his father Prince Charles - has died in a suspected suicide and the royal couple have since expressed how "deeply saddened" they are at the tragedy.
A statement read: "The Duke and Duchess of Cambridge are deeply saddened to learn of the death of Jacintha Saldanha. Their Royal Highnesses were looked after so wonderfully well at all times by everybody at King Edward VII Hospital, and their thoughts and prayers are with Jacintha Saldanha's family, friends and colleagues at this very sad time."
The duchess' close friend Jessica added that she is feeling better since leaving the hospital last week, and has even developed her first pregnancy craving.
